The café name Let’s Go Bago made me wonder for a moment. Bago? Bagel? Sandwich?
Bago is actually the owner’s French bulldog. Somehow, the Frenchie ended up with a café named after him, complete with a pet-friendly space and a menu of generously filled sandwiches.
The café is located at 1A Duxton Hill, taking over the former The Cloud space.
Another sandwich café, yes, but at least the bread is different.
Rather than joining the sourdough, focaccia or bagel wave, Let’s Go Bago makes its sandwiches with house-made ciabatta.
The menu also has a playful streak, with names such as Bago’s #1, Bingo Balaboo, Bago’s Cheat Day, Bago Treat! and Bisou Bisou, with prices starting from $14.
I decided to go for the signature Bago’s #1 ($18), which came with prime ribeye, miso mayo, Dijon mustard, fried natsu, shredded vegetables and pickles.
It arrived cut into two thick halves, and the ciabatta worked well here.
The bread had a light, crisp crust and soft, chewy texture, but was not so tough that the beef and vegetables were pushed out with every bite.
If there was a small thing to nitpick, I would have preferred the ribeye flavour to come through more clearly, though the sandwich was still not excessively greasy.
The Green Tea Popcorn Chicken Bites ($8) also sounded unusual enough to order. The chicken was coated in a honey green tea glaze, then finished with seaweed, furikake, sesame and togarashi.
I would not say “green tea” was the first flavour that came to mind. It tasted more sweet-savoury, with some heat and seaweed fragrance appearing afterwards. I actually liked this better than imagined.
The Red Pepper & Tomato Soup ($8) was the one that made the meal feel more complete.
The soup which arrived in a mug was smooth, lightly tangy and slightly sweet, with parmesan adding some savouriness.
Two small Bubus came on the side. Tearing them apart and dipping them into the soup was simple but satisfying.
These fluffy house-made milk buns are also sold individually in flavours such as Ham & Cheese, Garlic Cream Cheese, Sea Salt Butter and Cinnamon Pecan.
Let’s Go Bago has more personality than I expected, and the house-made ciabatta and slightly varied combinations also help it avoid becoming just another sandwich café.
