Another new pastry café in the CBD, and this one comes with a Hong Kong background.

Mimmo has opened at Asia Square Tower 1, which is convenient if you work around Shenton Way and Downtown, and less ideal if you are driving in just for pastries (cue expensive CBD parking).

The name Mimmo may be new to Singapore, but the brand started in Hong Kong, where it first appeared as a bakery concept in Quarry Bay.

It is led by chef Domenico Giammarella, a Montreal-born pastry chef with French and Italian heritage, and that background explains quite a bit of the menu here.

That is why you see Croissant ($4), Pain Au Chocolat ($5), Croissant aux Amandes ($6), Apple Croissant ($5), Raspberry Pain Suisse ($5), alongside Egg Tart ($4) and Pistachio Bolo Bao ($6).

The Pistachio Bolo Bao ($6) was the one I was most curious about, because it best represents Mimmo’s Hong Kong-meets-European direction.

It looked like a neater, more polished take on a bolo bao, with a pale crust over a soft bun.

The top had a crumbly texture (but not as much as the usual HK-style bolo bao), while the bun underneath was light and fluffy.

The pistachio flavour was present, though I would have liked a stronger nutty fragrance. Still, I liked that it offered something different from the usual pastry selection.

The Croissant aux Amandes was actually not bad (and if you follow my IG, would know that I eat a lot of Almond Croissants).

It had a crisp, flaky top, fragrant frangipane inside, and a nutty richness that did not go overboard with sweetness.

The Matcha Raspberry Slice looked the most IG-worthy of the items I tried, with neat green and pink layers, cream on top and a raspberry to finish.

Taste-wise, the raspberry came through more clearly than the matcha. The tartness helped cut through the cream, but I can imagine some preferring a deeper matcha note.

The space has a glass frontage, counter seats, wood accents, round café tables, and a softer seating area with plants and marble-style tables.

Good for morning coffee, takeaway pastry boxes for the office, a quick meeting, or a tea break when everyone collectively needs that afternoon snack.
