Shu Bakery is the new café by the team behind Chū and Co, which means some people would already arrive with expectations.
After all, Chū and Co has built a following for bakes, coffee, and that ‘backyard-like’ neighbourhood feel.
While both are actually located around the Serangoon Gardens area, Shu Bakery feels like a different chapter.
There is proper indoor seating, a bigger café menu, and a softer, moodier space that makes you want to slow down (even if your brain is already thinking about what else to order).
The menu is not just about bakes, and there are more savoury plates to look out for (though quite many are bread-dependent).
There are items like Chu + Shu Toast ($15.50), Avocado Toast ($13), Egg Salad ($14.80), Duck Rillette ($18.50), Cold Stracciatella Toast ($17.50), Kombu Maitake Toast ($18) and Uni Scrambled Egg ($26).
I went straight for the Uni Scrambled Egg ($26), partly because uni on a café brunch menu sounds pretty uncommon. This came with uni scramble, bafun uni, tzatziki, chive and toast.
The eggs were soft and creamy, with that orange sheen from the uni. The pieces of sea urchin added some gentle briny richness, though not in a big way.
Of course I had to order the namesake Chu + Shu Toast ($15.50) which came with two sides – both were competent.
One side was served on softer yoghurt toast with kaya custard and salted butter, giving it a more local touch.
The other side came on sourdough with Brazil nut chocolate praline, banana and cocoa nibs.
This was rich, sweet and nutty. Basically, toast for people who say they want breakfast but secretly want dessert.
Also look out for the rotating sweets ‘hidden’ in the display, for desserts and bakes like Old School Banana, Hojicha Yuzu, Lemon Summer Berries and Strawberry Jam Cheesecake.
My friend ordered the unassuming Earl Grey Banana, which gave that familiar, old-style, soft comfort. Not the type that shouts ‘Instagrammable’, but maybe that was the point.
Just be prepared to wait for a seat at that single communal table, as the nearby Kovan crowd will soon figure out that this is the best-looking living room café in the neighbourhood.
