If you spent any time hanging around Bukit Timah in the past few years, you might remember a tiny coffee nook that felt more like a hallway than a cafe.
Flip Coffee Roasters originally occupied a modest spot that lived up to the name “Pocket”, but they recently packed up their beans and moved to a much more ambitious location at Stevens Road.
This new café is situated next to the Mercure Singapore On Stevens, trading its old rustic charm for a more polished environment.
I had mixed feelings about the move because I enjoyed the intimacy of their original ‘hole in the wall’.
The interior is significantly larger than their old home, boasting high ceilings and massive windows that flood the room with natural light.
It follows a clean aesthetic with white walls, warm wooden furniture, and plenty of leafy green plants scattered around to soften the edges.
The space feels airy and expansive. Even when the cafe is full, you do not feel like you are breathing down the neck of the person at the next table.
The kitchen has expanded its offerings with a menu that uses rather eccentric names.
Light snacks include Toast Mama? ($8.50), A Damn Good Hummus ($13.50), Savoury Waffle ($11), A Very Good Slaw ($9.50), and a pasta salad called Ceremonial Matcha ($12.50).
For those needing a full meal, the options consist of A Good Cottage Pie ($20), Supple Thighs ($20), Basic Breakfast ($18), Know Your Onions ($21), and Sam Really Likes This Salad ($17.00).
I tried the Basic Breakfast ($18), which arrived as a thick slice of shokupan topped with onion confit, herby bechamel, and a cured egg yolk that added a salty depth.
I also looked over the bakes display which featured Marcelina’s Basque ($8), Square a Square Scone ($6.50), Best Damn Banana Cake ($5.50), and a Sore Throat Brownie ($6).
The coffee remains the main focus here, and they take their brewing quite seriously.
I had a standard white coffee which was smooth and well-balanced with a pleasant nutty finish.
They offer various filter options ranging from an everyday Rwanda Inzovu ($7) to top shelf selections like Panama Blackmoon Symbiosis ($25) for the true enthusiasts.
The new space is comfortable and visually pleasing, making it a great spot for both work and casual catch-ups.
