brū is one of those cafés where finding it may take longer than ordering your drink.
If you are heading there for the first time, look for Bukit Merah Central Food Centre first.
The café is found upstairs at Block 162, and from ground level there is not much to suggest that a coffee place is ‘hiding’ there.
Once upstairs, brū itself is a very small operation with a dark wooden counter, coffee machine and little else inside.
There is no proper dine-in area either, so customers who want to stay can sit on the camping chairs placed along the corridor outside next to a hair salon (it is shaded, so it isn’t that hot).
Menu-wise, brū focuses mainly on coffee, matcha, hojicha and a list of more elaborate drinks grouped under “Guilty Pleasures”.
These include the trending Dubai Chocolate Latte ($8.90), Ube Coconut Latte ($8.90), Cookie Butter Latte ($8.90), Maple Seasalt Latte ($8.90), Lavender Cream Matcha ($8.90), and Cookie Butter Cream Hojicha ($8.90).
Plus Pistachio Cream Americano ($7.90), Lychee Rose Coconut Cloud ($7.90) and Earl Grey Lavender Cloud ($7.90) which all sound pretty indulgent.
The barista suggested that I try the Lavender Cream Matcha ($8.90), which I did. It came in rather photogenic layers of pale purple, milk and green matcha before everything eventually mixed together.
Taste-wise, lavender can be divisive, mainly because we are so used to smelling it elsewhere.
Thankfully, this stayed firmly on the drinkable side for me, with the cream rounding out the floral note and matcha.
The other was the Strawberry Matcha ($6.50), with strawberry running through the milk and matcha to give it that familiar pink-and-green combination that has become almost compulsory on café menus these days.
This is really somewhere to come for a drink, take a seat along the corridor if one is available, and watch life at Bukit Merah Central go by.
