Alexandra Central is a building that often feels like it is caught in the shadow of its more famous neighbour, IKEA.

To be honest, most visitors rarely venture past the ground floor eateries, leaving the upper levels to feel somewhat abandoned.

The corridors are lined with enrichment centres and beauty salons that remain shuttered during off-peak hours, creating a quiet atmosphere.

However, those willing to take the escalator up to the second and third floors will find a number of eateries and cafés such as Yukkuri Kohi, Pastry Haven by Helen, and Velveté Boutique Cafe.

Yukkuri Kohi is a speciality coffee nook that operates within a shared retail space.

By day, the unit functions as a café for coffee enthusiasts, but it also serves as the home for Rogue’s Passage.

(Rogue’s Passage is a tabletop gaming studio and hobby shop that serves as a community hub for boardgame rentals and gamers.)

The walls are a deep charcoal grey, complemented by professional-grade espresso equipment and a sleek-looking counter.

The dimly lit space encourages the “yukkuri” or slow and relaxed pace that its name suggests.

The menu is categorised by taste profiles such as “Approachably Expressive” and “Distinct and Seasonal,” offering a range of single origin beans from Ethiopia, Kenya, and Colombia.

The café focuses on pour-over coffee first (from $8.50 to $14), though espresso-based drinks ($6.50) are available for those who prefer something more familiar.

I started with a Latte ($6.50) made from the Shantawane beans from Ethiopia, and it turned out brighter than I expected.

Instead of leaning too heavy or chocolatey, it had a gentle citrusy lift that made the cup feel clean and refreshing.

For the pour-over, I had the Milan from Colombia. This was more obviously expressive, with a fruit-forward profile that leaned towards melon, white grape and a light cranberry-like brightness.

One point to note is that the quality of the coffee may depend on the barista on duty.

During my visits, the team seemed to be still getting the hang of things, so consistency might vary as they settle into their rhythm.
