Oh, I heard that this new matcha café was opened by a group of friends and former Eatbook colleagues.
It is nice to know that after years of reviewing food, watching trends come and go, and probably drinking too many iced matchas in the name of work, they have now opened their own place
MOOF is a new matcha bar at Eon Shenton, which is honestly not the first place that comes to mind when you think of a café hunt.
The space is compact, with a small preparation area, menu cards pinned against the wall, and a few seats for those who want to have their drink there.
So nope, not the kind of place where you work with your laptop.
The menu is centred on matcha and hojicha, with Classic Matcha Latte ($7), Specialty Matcha Latte ($9), Specialty Usucha ($8), and Classic Hojicha Latte ($7).
Seasonal drinks include Strawberry Royal Milk Pudding with Matcha or Hojicha ($9), Black Sesame Matcha or Hojicha ($8.50), and Pickled Ume and Plum Iced Tea ($7).
MOOF sources its tea powder from Mori Matcha, which is a homegrown brand.
I had the Black Sesame Matcha ($8.50), which caught my attention first. Here, it came layered with milk, black sesame and matcha, with dark streaks around the cup.
A small card also gave more information about the matcha used, including Shizuoka origin, Yabukita and Okumidori cultivars, ceremonial grade, first flush harvest and bead mill milling.
Taste-wise, the Black Sesame Matcha was quite promising.
The first impression was creamy, nutty and gently roasted, with the black sesame giving it a slight texture and more layered flavour.
There were also Madeleines ($3 for one, $5.50 for two) available during my visit, though the bakes selection may change along the way.
MOOF Speciality Matcha Bar offers a decent alternative to standard coffee options in the Shenton Way area.
The drink prices may lean toward the higher side for a takeaway concept, but the unique textures provide that special something for local office workers.
