Asterisk Espresso is not exactly along the main café stretch of Phuket Old Town, but I had heard enough about its coffee to take a Grab over.
It is located within Bedline Hotel in Phuket Town, which may not be the most conventional setting for an award-winning speciality coffee bar.
On the wall and counter, the certificates and trophy give a clearer idea of what the café is about (and why I was there).
Asterisk Espresso is linked to Future Kittipop Eangchoun, Thailand National Barista Champion 2025, who represented Thailand at the World Barista Championship.
He happened to be there supervising when I visited.
So yes, this is still a hotel café, but one with huge coffee credentials.
The menu is focused mainly on coffee, with the original range priced at THB 80 for hot drinks and THB 90 for iced drinks.
Options include Espresso (THB 80), Americano (THB 80), Pour Over (THB 80), Caffe Latte (THB 80), Cappuccino (THB 80), and Caffe Mocha (THB 80).
For non-coffee choices, there is Niko Neko Matcha Latte or Tea (THB 100 hot, THB 120 iced), with Yuri Matcha, Tsubaki Hojicha and Mokuren Genmaicha listed on the menu.
The bean selection is probably where Asterisk Espresso becomes more interesting for those who like to choose according to profile.
The bottles on the counter are labelled according to seasons and blends.
These include Summer with Ethiopia and Guatemala beans in a light roast profile, Spring with Thai, Colombia and Brazil beans showing chocolate, nutty and caramel notes, and Autumn with Thai, Colombia and Brazil beans leaning towards dark chocolate and fuller body.
I tried the Iced Black Coffee which was clean and smooth, with quite a pleasurable balance between brightness and body.
The Hot White Coffee had a softer, rounder profile, with neat latte art and a smooth milk texture.
Could say it was possibly one of the best cups (maybe the best) I had this Phuket trip.
There are many pretty cafés around Phuket, but Asterisk Espresso feels more focused on what goes into the cup.
For coffee drinkers, that is probably a good reason to remember it.
