Mei Ling Market & Food Centre has a relatively new stall on the second floor, though Wei Jian Local Delights itself is not new to the hawker scene.
The stall relocated here from Yew Tee and now sits at the back of the food centre at #02-23, right beside Sin Kee Famous Chicken Rice (the other one).
It had already built up some following at its previous location for familiar local favourites such as Fried Hokkien Prawn Mee ($6, $8), Fried Kway Teow ($5.50, $7.50) and Fried Carrot Cake in either White or Black ($4.50, $5.50, $6.50).
For those who cannot decide between black or white, there is also a Black & White Fried Carrot Cake ($6.80), which was what I went for.
The portion was generous, with a sizeable serving of both versions on the same plate.
I preferred the black carrot cake slightly more, as the radish cake pieces were well coated with dark sweet sauce, with some caramelised and slightly charred edges adding more fragrance.
It was sweet, but thankfully not to the point where everything became sticky or heavy.
There were also enough uneven fried bits and browned surfaces to give the carrot cake some texture rather than becoming one soft mass.
The white version had a more pronounced egg flavour, though I found it a tad soft and would have preferred the outer layer to be crisper.
Interestingly, Wei Jian has moved into a food centre where there is already a long-established Mei Ling Street (Handmade) Carrot Cake at #02-41, so regulars now have another carrot cake option within the same level.
