ABC Brickworks Food Centre actually has quite a number of chicken rice and roast meat stalls, so it takes a bit to stand out here.
There are Tong Fong Fatt Hainanese Boneless Chicken Rice, Huat Hainanese Chicken Rice, Warong Adam Boneless Chicken, and I also spotted a new Small Black Hainanese Chicken Rice. So many.
Then there is Sin Heng Kee Hainanese Chicken Rice 新兴记海南鸡饭 at #01-34, one of those stalls where I know people who are regulars.
Which means the queue may just get even longer after this. Sorry first.
Sin Heng Kee serves more than just Hainanese Chicken Rice, and you can also expect Char Siew Rice, Roast Meat Rice, Roast Duck Rice, Roast Chicken Rice and a number of mix-and-match combinations.
Wait a minute, the Chicken Rice starts from just $3.50, which is super affordable in today’s economy.
If you want something more indulgent, there is the 3-in-1 Duck, Char Siew and Roast Meat Rice ($7.50), along with whole chicken, half duck and quarter duck options.
I usually go for the 3-in-1 plate, with chicken, char siew and roast pork over rice.
The chicken rice itself was better than expected. The chicken was smooth and tender enough, in that old-school roasted chicken style.
The skin had some flavour from the light sauce, and it worked well with the rice, cucumber and chilli.
But the char siew may be the part that I liked most. The pieces were chunky, glazed and sweet-savoury, with some caramelised edges.
The roast pork was decent, though I would say it played more of a supporting role on my plate. It could have a little more crackle, while some parts were a tad dry.
Still, a little of that sweet roast sauce over the rice made the whole plate more enjoyable, especially when mixed with the char siew and roast pork.
The rice was not just plain white rice hiding under the meats, but had enough chicken fragrance and oiliness to stand on its own.
I can see why people like Sin Heng Kee. It is budget-friendly, generous, old-school yet still hearty and tasty. (For my friends who are regulars, just do not blame me if the queue gets longer.)
