At ABC Brickworks Food Centre, Leng Kee Fish Soup 龍記 at #01-41 feels like the stall you go to when you want something lighter.
But do note that it opens for limited hours and only on selected days of the week, and there is usually a long line.
(There is also another Leng Kee Fish Soup outlet at Bukit Timah Food Centre with a similar signboard, though I am unsure how these two stalls are related.)
You can order Batang Fish Soup, Seafood Soup, Fish Maw Soup, Seafood Fish Head Noodle and Sliced Fish Bee Hoon, though some items may not be available depending on the day.
Most bowls are priced around $5 to $8, with takeaway at an additional $0.30.
I ordered the Sliced Fish Soup with rice, and it arrived in a clean, pale broth with thick fish slices, lettuce, tomato and some fried garlic bits.
The broth was so light (清) and clean-tasting, yet still flavourful with a mild sweetness rather than a heavy, full-bodied fish stock.
It was not the milky, rich type, and it did not try to cover everything with too much seasoning.
Some may find it a little plain, especially if you prefer stronger fish soup with evaporated milk or more depth from fried fish bones.
The fish slices were the main reason to order this. They were cut quite thick, fresh-tasting and firm without being tough.
And they held together well in the hot soup instead of breaking apart too easily.
I would not call it the most powerful fish soup around, but I can understand why it has its regulars. The fish slices are generous and fresh, the broth is light, and the whole bowl is very budget-friendly.
