Song Wat Road has quickly become the place where everyone traveling to Bangkok wants to go.
The area is a busy mix of old wholesale warehouses and new, stylish cafes that attract crowds every day (and even more during the weekends).
After watching a YouTube video from BenRanAway (which featured their family trip trying out viral spots), I decided to check out Wanjai Cafe House.
It is slightly hidden away within an alley, which makes it feel like a discovery compared to the more obvious shops on the main street.
The shophouse has a very rustic, weathered look that fits perfectly with the history of the neighbourhood.
The menu at Wanjai focuses on classic Thai treats and refreshing drinks. They serve various sizes of Mango Sticky Rice (THB 95 to 195) and Durian Sticky Rice (THB 85).
When mango is in season in Bangkok, usually from March to May, the fruit reaches a level of sweetness that is hard to beat.
The mango I was served was soooooo sweet and had a smooth, buttery texture without any stringy fibres.
The sticky rice was warm and well-seasoned with coconut milk, offering a good balance of salty and sweet notes.
I liked that they served the extra coconut milk in a separate small container, so I could control the richness of each bite.
You can also find a selection of steamed or grilled bread starting at THB 49 with toppings like salted butter, pandan custard, or Nutella.
For a simple snack, they also offer fried dough sticks with dipping sauces like Thai tea custard.
Their drink list is quite long, featuring signature milks, fruit smoothies, and traditional Thai coffees like Oliang.
You can sit on a wooden bench outside and watch influencers take photos in the alley while you eat.
Or inside where there are many old-school decorations that takes you back to the yesteryears.
