Having visited the original Onibus Coffee outlets in Tokyo, I was particularly keen to see how the brand would work in Bangkok.
When Central Park first opened, this was the very first outlet I visited (or rushed towards 555) within the new mall.
It occupies a prominent space on the ground floor and makes a strong first impression. The most striking feature is the curved, terracotta-hued counter.
Some background: The brand was founded in 2012 by Atsushi Sakao, who spent years researching coffee culture in Australia before establishing Onibus in Japan.
The name “Onibus” means “public bus” in Portuguese, reflecting the idea of coffee as a vehicle that connects producers with consumers.
Espresso based orders include the standard Americano (THB 140) and Latte (THB 150), with oat milk available as a substitute.
I noticed that they have integrated local Thai beans into their offerings, which I thought was a nice touch for an international brand.
Their “STEP” Thailand Original Blend features beans from Chiang Mai, Ethiopia, and Kenya, resulting in a complex acidity with notes of stone fruit and raisin.
However, I thought that the coffee leaned towards the lighter and brighter side, with a more tea-like shape and fruitier acidity. Some may just prefer something more robust or with more ‘kick’.
If you prefer a heavier body, then I recommend the “City Roast” combines Chiang Mai beans with origins from Brazil and Ethiopia, offering profiles of molasses and chocolate.
Beyond the coffee, the menu includes interesting non-coffee items such as a Spicy Lemonade (THB 150) and a Craft Cola (THB 150).
Unlike many of the smaller Tokyo branches, the Bangkok outlet offers a small food and dessert menu.
Sweet options range from a Salted Caramel Cake (THB 120) to a rich Tiramisu (THB 210) and a Yuzu Olive Oil Cake (THB 130).
Onibus Coffee has managed to bring a piece of Tokyo’s speciality coffee culture to Bangkok without feeling like a generic franchise.
It still feels recognisably Onibus, but with enough local touches to suit the Bangkok crowd. I like it.
