I found Ernie’s Coffee almost by accident. It sits under an HDB block at 49 Stirling Road (quite near MDIS), one of those quiet corners in Queenstown that most people walk past without noticing.
The café opened earlier this year and already feels like it belongs here.
The interior is compact, tight but cosy, with simple tables and a few seats (two, to be exact) facing the window.
You may be thinking the owner is called “Ernie”. Actually, nope.
The name came about after spotting Ernie the plush toy sitting in the corner, and they thought it clicked. Ernie means “earnest”. (Would be cute to have put traces of Ernie around, I thought.)
Ernie’s Coffee keeps its coffee menu focused, from the classic espresso ($3.90) and long black ($3.90) to the well-balanced latte, flat white and cappuccino ($4.50).
For something a little different, there’s the rosemary-infused White Hug ($4.90), Black Magic long black with micro-foam ($4.50) and even a Milo-cino ($4.00) for those skipping caffeine.
Their house blend of Colombian and Brazilian beans gives it a smooth, medium body with a touch of chocolate and berries in the aroma.
It’s creamy without heaviness, carrying hints of caramel and dark chocolate before ending with a soft buttery finish.
The food menu stays small, with a neat selection on display such as red velvet cake ($6.80), dark chocolate brownie ($4.90), muffins ($4.50) and banana cake ($3).
For something more substantial, there’s the Double Cheese Mushroom Quesadilla ($7.90), Kaya and Butter Grilled Sandwich ($4.20), Garlic and Herb Butter Grilled Sandwich ($4.20) and Turkey Ham and Spinach Quiche ($6.90).
Craving for something warm, I decided to go for the Double Cheese Mushroom Quesadilla ($7.90).
It arrived golden and slightly crisp on the outside, with a soft, molten middle. The cheese stretched with each bite, and the mushrooms added a mild earthiness.
Straightforward, nothing too fanciful, but comforting.
Service here feels natural. The staff are attentive without fussing, friendly without forcing it.
There’s no attempt to be trendy or ironic. It doesn’t have the branding budget of bigger names or the curated interiors of influencer spots.
Everything feels genuine. This is one of those true hidden gems, easy to miss but worth finding.
