Sunrise Traditional Coffee & Toast 昇陽傳統咖啡 at Market Street Hawker Centre will be shutting its doors at the end of September 2025.
The official last day is 26 September displayed when I visited the stall.
For more than two decades, this humble stall has anchored mornings in Singapore’s Central Business District, serving kopi, kaya toast and soft-boiled eggs to waves of office workers.
Its closure marks not just the end of a breakfast stop but the loss of a daily ritual for countless regulars who started their day here. Sad.
The roots of Sunrise stretch back much further than Raffles Place.
In 1970, Mr Teo Yan Lam opened Yan Toh Eating House at Kranji before relocating to Yew Tee Industrial Estate.
After the eating house closed in 2003, Sunrise was the family’s answer and the current owners worked hard to perfect the family’s recipe for coffee and tea.
Over time it became a trusted name in the CBD.
The kopi is unapologetically robust. The Kopi O ($1.20) is strong and earthy, with a bitter edge that kickstarts any morning.
Drinks here are not just limited to the classics either. Options range from Horlicks + Kopi ($2.60) to Honey Lemon ($2.50), with the ice-blended range bringing a variety to the menu.
Affordable, extensive, and familiar, it is a drinks list that caters to both the nostalgic and the curious.
Prices were kept low enough that even interns could afford breakfast without guilt.
No official reason was given for the closure. Thank you Sunrise for the memories and all the coffee.
