Slab Coffee at Phillip Street may look slightly intimidating from the outside with its serious black façade.
Even after stepping in, the theme continues with a long black coffee bar, charcoal flooring, black cups and rows of coffee bags lined neatly along the wall.
But the CBD space is actually longer and more comfortable than the entrance suggests, stretching towards a seating area at the back.
Slab Coffee is a relatively new name at Raffles Place, though the brand has a connection to private members’ club 33Club, where the concept first started before opening this public-facing outlet at Royal Group Building.
Coffee is taken quite seriously here, with Espresso from $3.90, Piccolo Latte from $4.50, Cappuccino from $6.20, Cafe Latte from $6.20 and Americano from $5.20.
Seasonal filter coffees start from $8, with the selection changing according to the small-lot beans available.
Their signature espresso blend is called The Keystone, using beans from Brazil, Colombia and Rwanda with stated tasting notes of plum, hazelnut, caramel and dark chocolate.
Food is geared towards breakfast and something quick before or during work, with Bacon & Egg Roll ($8.90), Chilli Crisp Egg Avo ($7.50), Triple Cheese Toasties ($6.90) and Ham & Cheese Croissant ($6.50).
I went for the Bacon & Egg Roll ($8.90), which came with a fried egg, bacon and greens packed into a toasted bun. It was a fairly substantial breakfast, though the flavours were quite standard.
The pastry section also includes Butter Croissant ($4.20), Pain au Chocolat ($4.80), Almond Croissant ($5.20) and Chocolate Swirl ($5.20), and I thought the prices were fairly reasonable considering the Raffles Place location.
And with doors opening from 7am on weekdays, this could be one of those places office workers around Raffles Place gradually work into their morning routine.
