When searching for “best dessert in Phuket”, I had seen this ice cream café appear so many times on Instagram.
Torry’s Ice Cream is right on Soi Rommani, one of the prettiest and busiest lanes in Phuket Old Town.
This may be a short, short street, but it connects the heritage area around Thalang Road, and most tourists visiting Phuket will probably walk through it at least once (and take many, many photos).
Soi Rommani was once part of Phuket Town’s red-light area, before the restored façades and photo-hungry crowds gave it a very different reputation.
Today, it is known for pastel Sino-Portuguese shophouses, and also this famous ice cream parlour.
Torry’s Ice Cream sits in a pink shophouse with gold details, wooden shutters and old-world Phuket touches.
Some stop for the ice cream, partly due to its reputation, and partly due to the super hot weather.
Opened in 2015, Torry’s is built around homemade ice cream inspired by Phuket desserts, local snacks and regional ingredients.
Signatures here include O-Aew Original (THB 120), O-Aew Phuket Pineapple & Yuzu (THB 180), Phuket Pineapple Spicy Chilli & Sea Salt (THB 135), Phuket Chocolate Cookies Ice Cream Sandwich (THB 260), DIY Your Own Sundae (THB 195), and Torry’s Shophouse Torch Ginger Sorbet Stick (THB 150).
When I was looking at the ice cream display, I noticed flavours that range from safer crowd-pleasers to more locally-inspired choices like Goat Milk with Biscoff, Phuket Dark Chocolate, Coconut Pandan and Si Tao Sor (a style of Phuket cookies & cream).
I decided to go for the Bi Co Moi (THB 150), served in a golden brass-style bowl with black glutinous rice, coconut milk and a scoop of pale blue ice cream.
The dessert worked better than expected, with the chewy rice giving it some bite, the coconut milk adding richness, and the ice cream keeping everything cool and mild.
It was also not overly sweet, which I appreciated.
The best part, or at least the most unexpected part, came after eating.
The staff helped to wash the golden bowl so I could take it home, and yes, it is now sitting in my kitchen. A free souvenir, so “yeah!”
