Tekka Food Centre may be best known for its long standing South Indian and spice stalls, but there is always more variety than first timers may expect.

That was where I previously spotted Pontian Noodle House 笨珍面家, a stall serving Pontian-style Wanton Noodles, Yellowtail Fish Ball Noodles, Chilli Ban Mian and a number of sides.

On a recent revisit, I noticed that Pontian Noodle House was no longer at unit #01-314. In its place is Lixiang Noodle House 丽香面家.

At first glance, I thought a new stall had taken over. I asked the hawkers about it, and was told that the boss had asked for the name to be changed, though they did not elaborate further.

According to them, everything else remains the same.

The current menu still has a fairly broad mix of noodle dishes.

There is Char Siew Noodle ($4.20), Double Taste Wanton Noodle ($4.20), Chicken Cutlet Noodle ($5.50), Fishball Noodle ($5), Dumpling Noodle ($5.20), and Chilli Ban Mian ($5).

I ordered the Wanton Mee, partly to see if it still tasted like the previous Pontian Noodle House version.

The bowl came with thin noodles tossed in a dark sauce, slices of char siew and chopped spring onions, with a small bowl of wanton soup (I topped up with fried wanton pieces on the side).

The char siew looked paler than before, without the brighter reddish glaze. It also had less of that roasted sweetness, with a leaner texture.

As for the base, it leaned more towards dark sauce, with a savoury-sweetness that felt closer to a regular hawker wanton mee.

A pity, as I thought the previous Pontian noodles was actually not bad, and had a more distinct taste.

What is worth mentioning is the stall also offers Chilli Ban Mian or You Mian ($5). Or add $1.60 to get a set meal with a choice of side.

I must say the portion was quite generous. I got flat noodles that were soft but not mushy, and they absorbed the sauce well.

Once mixed, the chilli paste coated the noodles evenly and delivered a steady savoury heat (rather than sharp spiciness).

As for the ingredients of minced pork, runny egg, and fried anchovies, the MVP had to be the braised mushroom which contributed earthy depth and a softness that lifted the bowl.
