Holland Drive Market & Food Centre is a two-storey hawker centre with stalls like New Lucky Claypot Rice and Ru Ji Fishball Noodles that draw regular crowds.
Yap Kee Wanton Egg Noodles is an under-the-radar stall that has operated at Holland Drive Food Centre since 2003.
Interesting to know that the stall is run by a couple from Johor, serving a slightly different egg noodle version of Wanton Mee.
Main choices include Wanton Egg Noodles ($5), Dumpling Egg Noodles ($6), Shredded Chicken Hor Fun ($5), and Wanton Soup ($5).
The special part? The noodles which are made using only flour and egg, with no added water or alkaline agents.
This gives them a firm, springy texture and a rich egg flavour. They are cooked in hot and cold water, then tossed to enhance their bite.
I think the texture is indeed a draw, and a key reason many customers return.
Also, you can choose from four sauce options: Original, Chilli, Black Sauce, or a mix of Chilli and Black Sauce.
The mixed sauce version has a mild heat and light sweetness. It coats the noodles evenly and complements their texture without overpowering it.
I will also recommend the original ‘white’ sauce. This is blend of light soy sauce and aromatic oil, allowing the natural eggy flavour and firm texture of the noodles to shine.
The char siew is roasted in-house. Here, it’s leaner than most, but it’s smoky and slightly sweet. Some might prefer fattier cuts.
Fair enough. But I liked how it didn’t grease up the rest of the plate.
The wantons are compact, filled with seasoned minced pork.
What’s underrated about Yap Kee is their consistency. If you are craving well-prepared JB-style egg noodles, this is one to try at Holland Drive.
