In case you are wondering why this stall is called “Somerset Wanton Mee”, there is a bit of local history behind the name.
This wanton mee stall built its reputation in a kopitiam near Somerset in the good-old days.
It was also part of the well-loved Gayworld Hawker Centre, and regulars fondly called it Somerset Wanton Mee as a simple way to identify the stall among so many others.
Some fans might also remember the stall from its time at Marine Parade Central.
Now, after all those moves, it’s finally settled at Old Airport Road Food Centre. Over 30 years of history all together.
On a side note: even Linda Wong 别问我是谁 fame is a fan.
Offerings at Somerset Wantan Mee include Wantan Noodle Dry or Soup ($4.00/$5.00), Dumpling Noodle Dry or Soup ($4.00/$5.00), Chicken Feet Noodle Dry or Soup ($4.00/$5.00), Mushroom Shredded Chicken Hor Fun Dry or Soup ($4.00/$5.00), and Braised Pork Noodle ($4.00/$5.00).
Customers can also add on Dumpling Soup ($4.00/$5.00), Wantan Soup ($4.00/$5.00), or Fried Wantan ($5.00).
Hor fun seems to be quite popular. It was sold out both times I visited.
Every bowl starts with the noodles. Somerset’s noodles came springy, cooked to just the right QQ texture. When I first tried them, I could taste a slight eggy note.
Now, the wantans. Each wantan felt like a small parcel packed with pork filling, seasoned well but not overly salty.
For the soup, Somerset keeps things classic. The broth was clear, peppery and just comforting enough.
The char siew was to the lean, thin, and more ordinary side.
A key thing was the sauce which was light, fragrant, but not too not heavy-handed.
While I can imagine some customers might prefer a sauce with more punch, there’s a certain lightness that matches the old-school flavour they are going for.
Somerset Wantan Mee may not be the most famous Wanton Mee in town, but you’ll finish your meal feeling satisfied and just a bit happier.
Sometimes, that’s exactly what a good old-school Wanton Mee can do.
