Char Siew Wan Ton Mee 德明叉烧云吞面 at Bedok 216 Food Centre is one of those stalls that may make wanton mee fans pause for a second.
The signboard still says “Dunman Food Centre”, which may bring to mind the old Dunman Road wanton mee stall at Onan Road.
Online mentions suggest that this Bedok stall is linked to the Dunman Char Siew Wanton Mee name, after a move from Geylang Lorong 29.
People who like the “Eng’s style” may find this familiar, with slightly-thicker-than-usual egg noodles, lean char siew, and chilli sauce that gives the plate that super kick.
The menu is kept straightforward, with Wan Tons (Dry or Soup) ($4, $4.50, $5) and Char Siew Wan Ton Mee (Dry or Soup) ($4, $4.50, $5).
You can choose between “normal spicy” or “super spicy”.
I had the dry Char Siew Wan Ton Mee, which came with egg noodles, char siew slices, vegetables, boiled wantons, chilli, and a bowl of soup on the side.
What makes this plate stand out from many other neighbourhood versions is the noodle texture. The strands were slightly thicker than the usual mee kia, with a firmer and more springy bite.
After a few tosses with the sauce and chilli, they still held their shape well instead of turning limp too quickly.
The chilli gives the noodles most of their character, with a sharp heat that builds as you eat.
Even the normal spicy version had enough kick, so those who usually prefer a sweeter, darker, and saucier wanton mee may find this rather direct. Maybe too direct.
The char siew is the lean, old style type, sliced thinly and scattered over the noodles. It is not the caramelised or fatty style, but it fits the more old-school feel of the plate.
It may not be for those looking for rich sauces or more premium roast meats, though I can see why regulars would return for that familiar old style bite.
If this is your first time trying, just go easy on the spice level first.
