The revival of Song Wat Road has brought a wave of speciality coffee shops to this hip Bangkok, and BEANS Coffee Roaster is one of the latest to join.
The brand has expanded steadily across Bangkok, with several outlets now established in areas such as Thonglor, Silom, EmSphere, Siam Paragon, Central World, EmQuartier, Central Park and Terminal 21.
Amongst these locations, the Song Wat branch is arguably the most visually striking.
It occupies a corner shophouse near Ratchawong Pier, and the older building has been kept largely in character, with exposed brick and a look that suits the district well.
The facade is also instantly recognisable by the perforated dog sculptures climbing the weathered walls; these are “iJUD”, the famous creations of Thai artist Wasinburee Supanichvoraparch.
Before entering, look out for the exterior mural created by the Thai artist Benzilla.
Inside, the café features high ceilings, exposed brickwork, and distressed plaster walls.
They offer several house blends, including the medium-roast Songwat Blend which features notes of honey and milk chocolate.
Other options range from the nutty B-1 blend to the dark-roast B-4 with hints of bitter sweet cocoa.
Signature drinks are a major draw here, featuring creative combinations such as Espresso Yuzu Soda (THB 135), Coconut Flower Espresso (THB 120), and the Dirty (THB 120).
I opted for one of their more uniquely named signatures, the “Be Kind, Be Warm” (THB 145).
This dual-layered drink was originally introduced as a Thai Mother’s Day special, and I am glad they chose to keep it on the permanent menu.
The sentimental concept is reflected in the flavours, as it combines coffee with jasmine and butterfly pea.
This combination provides a light floral fragrance and a gentler, more delicate character than a standard espresso order.
BEANS feels like a good match for Song Wat, with a heritage setting, distinctive exterior, and coffee that gives people a reason to stay beyond the photos.
