You may not expect to find Japanese rice bowls made by someone who used to sell cars, but that’s exactly what happens at The Bowl Story in ABC Brickworks Food Centre.
This little hawker stall has quietly built a following for offering donburi with loads of value and a side of sincerity.
Don’t go too late in the evenings though, as the few times I was there, they were sold out.
The menu keeps things clear and comforting.
Bowls include Chicken Katsu Don ($5.50), Pork Katsu Don ($6), Ebi Fry Don ($5.50), Karaage Chicken Don ($5.50), Yakitori Chicken Don ($5.50) and Fish Katsu Don ($6).
For curry lovers, there are versions such as Chicken Katsu Curry ($5.50), Pork Katsu Curry ($6), Ebi Fry Curry ($5.50), Karaage Chicken Curry ($5.50) and Fish Katsu Curry ($6).
Each bowl comes with Japanese short-grain rice, an onsen egg, pickles, and a small bowl of miso soup. Value-for-money for its price.
I went for the Pork Katsu Don ($5.50), with golden cutlet sitting over glossy rice, the soft egg on the side looking wobbly.
The pork itself was not bad, fairly juicy, and while the sauce leaned a little sweet for my taste, it coated each grain of rice nicely.
The onsen egg, rich and runny, bound everything together. Not life-changing, but well-executed comfort food.
As for the Chicken Katsu Curry ($6), the curry was mild, with the familiar sweetness of Japanese-style stews, thickened with carrots and potatoes.
It may not taste as ‘authentic’ as the ones served in Japanese specialised restaurants, but there was a homely take to the gravy.
For this price point, it is hard to fault what The Bowl Story offers. Not spectacular, but honest and easy to enjoy.
