If you follow the dessert scene in Singapore, you will know that Queic by Olivia is not just another cheesecake shop in a mall.

The brand is an offshoot of Olivia Restaurant and Lounge, a Spanish restaurant that made a name for itself with its signature Burnt Basque Cheesecake.

When it first appeared in Singapore a few years ago, that cheesecake became something of a cult dessert (people on Xiao Hong Shu were also talking about it).

People queued, people pre-ordered, and people debated whether it was the best Basque cheesecake (ever).

The JEM outlet brings this well-loved creation to the Jurong heartlands so you no longer need to travel across town to try it.

Here, you will find multiple styles including Idiazabal which uses a Basque sheep’s milk cheese, Cheddar which adds a savoury edge, and a range of Asian inspired flavours created specifically for Singapore.

The Basque series covers Classic ($11 for a slice, $49 for a six inch cake), Idiazabal ($11) and Cheddar ($11).

The original Basque cheesecake was created in San Sebastián, and Olivia’s version stood out because of its molten centre, caramelised top and a balance of creaminess and lightness that many tried to imitate.

If you are new to the brand, then make this the first to order.

The “Flavor Collection” had a range of creative flavours from New York ($11), Chocolate Coulant ($12), Apple ($12), Black Sesame ($12), Matcha Strawberry ($13), Matcha ($12.50), Pandan Kaya ($12), to Gula Melaka ($12).

I was most curious about the Pandan Kaya ($12 per slice), as it was a JEM exclusive.

It took a local flavour and worked it into a creamy base that carried a natural pandan aroma. Not too sweet, not too heavy, and surprisingly delightful.

And of course, the very expensive Dubai Chocolate ($24.50). Not a typo.

Sitting in a league of its own, it was dark, dense, sweet and unapologetically indulgent.

Pricey, and unfortunately not a favourite for me. Try it if Dubai Chocolate is your thing (since it’s trending).

Queic takes a single idea cheesecake and pushes it in many directions without losing the original spirit.

The danger is, one slice is never enough.
