[Johor Bahru] This is for the serious coffee drinkers in JB.
Clod Coffee Bar & Roasters sits along Jalan Beringin in Taman Melodies, away from the busier café trails of Johor Bahru.
From the outside, you could almost miss it. No glowing signs, no glass display of pastries trying to lure you in.
Inside, the first thing you notice is the calm. The walls are bare and the air smells faintly of roasted beans and warm milk.
A large painting of a landscape, the steady hiss of the espresso machine, and the quiet murmur of people talking about beans (not gossip).
Clod feels like a coffee studio too, with the coffee bar on one side ringed by tall stools. It is handled by a single barista who manages the whole shop.
The menu reads like a world tour of coffee, with two long pages of options. Clod rotates its selection seasonally, so what you drink today might not be there next month.
The barista told me to flip to the cover page because I looked stuck at sheer number of choices.
The offerings during my visit included Casa Blanca Geisha, Colombia “Orange Grape Juice” (RM25), Hacienda La Papaya Sidra, Ecuador (RM25), Don Eli Catuai, Costa Rica “Green Apple Black Tea” (RM21), and Hacienda La Papaya Typica, Ecuador “Orange Pear Tea Topped with Pineapple Juice” (RM27).
Milk-based options included Juan Carlos Verlasz Sidra, Ecuador “Acidic Chocolate Milk” (RM24), Infinity La Imora SL-28, Costa Rica “Mixed Black Berry Milk Tea” (RM23), and Sau Bendito, Brazil “Sweet Nuts Nougat” (RM20).
For those with a taste for extravagance, there were featured Geishas from Panama and Costa Rica, each priced around RM48.
I started with the Chilaka 74158 from Ethiopia.
The first sip was bright but soft, with the sweetness of white peach and a whisper of berry. The acidity was lively but not sharp. Loved it.
For the white, I tried the Sau Bendito from Brazil.
It was a complete shift in mood. Smooth, nutty, and gently sweet, with the flavour of nougat and toasted nuts. The milk was well-textured, blending perfectly without muting the coffee.
The baristas would explain the origins of the beans and tasting notes if you had question.
Prices are on the steep side for Johor Bahru (I was slightly surprised initially), but the coffee justifies it.
The menu changes often, so you are not only paying for a cup but for access to small-batch beans that rarely stay long.
Think of it as a rotating coffee gallery rather than just a usual café.
