[Johor Bahru] I chanced upon Palates & Bagels — Melodies of Thai in Taman Melodies after the wanton mee stall nearby, which I wanted to try, wasn’t open.
Located in a two-storey bungalow with a charming rustic vibe, Palates & Bagels looked quite promising at first glance.
It turned out to be a popular place. With their original outlet at along Jalan Dhoby, I hear they’re opening a new concept soon.
The raw textured walls and wooden furnishings give it a relaxed, almost Bali-inspired feel.
The airy, spacious layout makes it even more inviting, especially on a warm day.
The menu centres around bagels, but with a clever twist – Thai and Asian-inspired fillings.
Main choices at Palates & Bagels include ISSAC (RM 42.90) featuring duck leg confit with orange Dijon mayo, NIN (RM 35.90) with Thai green chilli and pulled lamb shoulder, and TOMMY (RM 52.90) with wagyu beef patty and pickle mornay sauce.
Other options include YOSHI (RM 32.90) with unagi and herbs cream cheese; AH SENG (RM 34.90) with prawn patty and hae bee hiam mayo; and CLOONEY (RM 32.90) with smoked salmon and capers.
You can choose your bagels, from savoury selections like Parmesan cheese, black truffle, Thai chilli paste, and garlic confit to more adventurous options like Matcha Mochi-Chicken Floss.
I went for the ALI (RM 19.90), paired with the best-selling Parmesan cheese bagel.
Loved it. The sambal bawang gives the filling a punchy kick, balanced by the richness of the egg and hash brown.
The Parmesan bagel has this dense, chewy interior complemented by a golden, slightly crisp crust.
This bread holds up well to the café’s generous and flavourful fillings without becoming overly heavy.
If bagels aren’t your thing, they’ve got plenty more to offer.
Their Thai Green Curry Pasta (RM 38.90) with pan-fried salmon is a refreshing twist on a classic, while the Red Curry Pasta (RM 37.90) with pulled smokey beef brisket can be hearty.
Their Curry Fries (RM 15.90) wasn’t too shabby.
The drinks here are just as creative as the food.
They offer Dirty Pillow (RM 15.90) a creamy espresso-based drink, Cloud Thai Milk Tea (RM 13.90), Minty Coconut Latte (RM 18.90) combining espresso with coconut milk and jelly, and Coconut Americano (RM 15.90) offering a refreshing twist with coconut water.
The staff are friendly and welcoming, happy to recommend dishes if you’re unsure.
