Walking into this café feels more like stepping into a Porsche lifestyle gallery.
Café Carrera by Baker & Cook at Jewel Changi Airport is not your typical airport café.
Just take a look at that car.
This Porsche-themed café has a blazing red sports car right at the entrance, of course attracting curious onlookers who stop for photos (even without buying a coffee).
There are walls decorated with Porsche memorabilia, scale models and glossy photographs.
The food menu is slightly larger than expected.
Sandwiches are named after famous driving routes (at least they put some effort into the branding).
You find the Black Forest High Road with smoked ham and rocket ($18), the Hai Van Pass with spicy chicken and pickled vegetables ($17), the Stelvio Pass with tomato and mozzarella ($17.00), the Highway One with salmon and cream cheese ($15.00) and the Route Napoléon with ham and comté cheese ($16.00).
I started with the Tokaido ($18), which looked slightly dramatic with its layers of Japanese sweet tamogo style egg stacked neatly over a breaded chicken cutlet inside a croissant.
Despite the café not having a proper kitchen, the croissant still had a crisp exterior.
The taste was satisfying enough but there was little to tie the elements together. A sauce or condiment would have helped bring some harmony.
Looking through the pastries, I saw 911 Butter Pretzel ($5.00), Otah Pain Suisse ($7.00), Pain au Chocolat ($5.50) and Butter Croissant ($5.00).
When I saw “otah”, I knew I needed to order it.
The laminated pastry was buttery and well baked, with a crisp outer shell that broke into soft layers. The otah filling delivered moderate spice and smokiness.
Something uniquely Singaporean, and frankly not bad.
For dessert, I went for the recommended Porsche Singapore Ondeh Ondeh Cake ($11).
Shaped into a neat cylinder and coated with shredded coconut, it was topped with a cream flower and a small chocolate crest.
The flavour was on the sweet side, leaning more on presentation and novelty. It looked great in photographs and was pleasant to eat, though not groundbreaking.
Something interesting is the set of macarons created specially for Porsche Singapore.
Each colour represents a Porsche paint shade and each is flavoured with a local inspiration. Pandan kaya, bandung, calamansi and milo all made appearances.
They were on the (highly) sweet side, but the flavours were at least clear enough to be enjoyable. Makes a fun gift.
I must say service was polite and staff were enthusiastic about sharing more about Porsche, even though it was clear I had almost zero knowledge of the routes and models.
Can be worth a stop if you are passing through Jewel, especially if you are curious to see how cars and café culture come together.
