I always see a long queue here, and finally got down early enough before the roasts are sold out.

At Chef Lup Roasted in the lower floor of Golden Mile Food Centre, it’s not unusual for the display of glistening roasts to be empty by mid-lunch.

That’s largely due to the quality (of course) and the man running it.

Darren Lup trained for over 15 years in Cantonese roasting, including a stint as executive chef of Kam’s Roast.

Highlights include Roasted Duck Rice ($5), Roasted Duck Drumstick Rice ($8), Crispy Roasted Pork Rice ($5), Crystal Char Siew Rice ($5), 2 Meat Combo Rice ($6.80), 3 Meat Combo Rice ($8.80), and Roasted Duck Drumstick 2 Combo Rice ($9.80).

For roasts alone, there are also the 2 Meat Combo (Small $12, Big $18), and 3 Meat Combo (Small $15, Big $25).

I ordered a plate with both Roasted Duck Drumstick and Char Siew ($9.80) with rice.

The roast duck looked so promising with its golden brown skin.

While the skin was not crackling crisp, it had this beautiful sheen and the layer of fat underneath rendered well.

The leg portion was more flavourful (I also ordered the regular cut to compare), though I still wished it was a tad less dry.

Between the two, the char siew was surprisingly the highlight for me.

These came in thick slices, each with a balance of lean and fat. The meat had such a tender bite and enough juice to keep it moist without feeling oily.

Oh, and the caramelisation on the outside? Sweet, sticky and delicious.

The Sio Bak aka Roasted Pork was the other star.

Biting into it, the crunch came first, then the juicy pork underneath. I liked that it was not overly greasy and still flavourful.

If I had to rank them, the char siew would still take the top spot.

The rice deserves a mention too. It came slightly oily, enough to carry the fragrance of the roasted meats.

When the juices from the duck and the glaze from the char siew soaked in, it became more than just filler on the plate.

Golden Mile is full of delicious options, but Chef Lup has carved out a name by keeping the focus where it belongs: on the craft of roasting.
