Good news for Teochew muay food lovers: Ah Seah Teochew Porridge has reopened as a stall at Serangoon Garden Food Centre, bringing its classic line-up of Teochew dishes back.

For many regulars, its return feels like a homecoming after the original Hougang outlet closed in 2022.

Long-time fans can finally breathe a sigh of relief, reunited with the familiar flavours and soothing bowls of porridge they missed.

Serving Teochew porridge in Hougang since 1955, Ah Seah Teochew Porridge is a heritage brand founded by Lee Huat, named after his nickname “Ah Seah”.

At 15, Ah Seah began working at a Teochew porridge shop along Upper Serangoon Road where he learned the skill of porridge-making.

He opened his first stall in 1964 at the former Lim Tua Tow Market and has relocated many times. It weathered the years in Teck Chye Teck Chye Terrace before shutting its doors, apparently due to staff fatigue and the ever-looming lease issue.

Let’s talk about the food. The menu is simple with signature minced meat, mixed vegetables, braised duck and braised pork.

Seafood dishes are aplenty, like homemade fish cake, mermaid fish, chilli ikan bilis, chilli dry shrimp, and sotong, to go with their plain porridge.

If you see steamed fish on offer, do not expect a sauce-heavy showstopper.

What you get is a piece of fresh fish, lightly salted, maybe with a few slices of ginger. More delicate that lets the natural flavour shine.

Options can include steamed fish with salted veggies, leatherjacket, batang fried, batang assam, black pomfret, and grouper (availability depending on the market).

The braised pork belly is a house favourite. It arrives in thick, unashamedly fatty slices, glistening with a sheen of soy and spice.

The minced pork with black bean sauce is lighter than the versions found in some other stalls, with a good hit of savouriness.
