One of the most talked-about Teochew Porridge places in Singapore has to be White House Teochew Porridge 白家潮州糜.
It is a family-run eatery that has been serving Teochew Porridge since the 1990s.
I have also included it as one of the 10 Best Teochew Porridge in Singapore a couple of years back.
Located along Serangoon Road, it’s a no-frills, fuss-free kind of spot.
It’s the kind of place you visit when you crave something warm and familiar, especially on a rainy day when all you want is a bowl of hot porridge with hearty side dishes.
The side dishes are where things get exciting.
Their signature braised duck, cooked with over 12 spices, is a highlight, along with other braised options like pork belly, pig head meat, tau kwa, and braised eggs.
Seafood lovers can enjoy dishes such as black bean fish head, sambal sotong, and sliced fish soup.
For something savoury and comforting, there’s homemade fish cake, black bean minced pork, and fried egg with preserved radish.
Spicy options like hae bee hiam and curry chicken add variety, making it easy to mix and match according to preference.
The Braised Duck ($15 onwards for a quarter) is a must-try.
Admittedly, I am the biggest fan of braised duck due to a slight gamey taste in some renditions, but well oh well…
White House’s Braised Duck was firm yet tender, flavourful and without that strong aftertaste.
The gravy is rich but not overpowering, making it great for spooning over your porridge.
Another popular dish is the Sesame Oil Chicken ($8), a comforting, home-style dish with tender chicken pieces cooked in an aromatic sesame oil sauce.
Looking through the display for dishes, I was very enticed by the thick slab of Otah ($6) which brought a different kind of indulgence.
Their rendition boasts generous chunks of mackerel embedded within, offering a succulent bite, juicy texture and piquant taste.
The Hae Bee Hiam or spicy dried shrimp ($6) is a fragrant and punchy dish that adds a bold kick to the plain porridge as well.
The porridge here is not overly watery, and the grains are soft but still hold their shape.
I also appreciate how fresh everything tastes. The owner, Mr Peh, apparently goes to the market at 5am every day to handpick ingredients.
As for the prices, you’re looking at around $15 or more per person, depending on what you order.
Sure, some dishes might feel a bit on the pricier side, but honestly, the freshness and homely taste make it worth it.
