Ye Lai Xiang Teochew Porridge 夜来香潮州粥 is one of those places that never seems to sleep.

Found at Bukit Merah View within the Kim San Leng (Henderson) kopitiam, it has been a go-to for late-night suppers and comforting meals at odd hours.

(Note: not to be confused with its predecessor Ye Shang Hai 夜上海潮州粥.)

Ye Lai Xiang Teochew Porridge is a well-known eatery in Singapore, situated at 116 Bukit Merah View

Yes, it is open from 10am all the way till 4am. Even if you arrive past midnight, there’s usually a small queue.

Taxi uncles seem to enjoy the affordability, also because parking is convenient.

Upon arrival, the stall's bright yellow signboard and extensive display of dishes immediately catch the eye.

The first thing you notice is the bright yellow signboard and the staggering variety of dishes behind the glass display.

Prices vary based on serving sizes and the specific dishes selected.

The system here is simple but old-school. Not bad lah, it’s fast and quick-moving.

Its extended operating hours and reasonable pricing make it a convenient option for those seeking a hearty meal at various times of the day or night.

There’s no price list, and you just pick your dishes while the staff tally up the cost in their heads. It might feel a little unpredictable, but regulars seem unbothered.

Ye Lai Xiang Teochew Porridge provides a comforting dining experience with its extensive selection of dishes and traditional porridge.

Prices are reasonable for the most part, though some dishes such as seafood can push the bill up.

Braised Pork Belly Ye Lai Xiang Teochew Porridge 夜来香潮州粥 at Bukit Merah View

The most eye-catching dish has to be the braised pork belly.

Dark, glossy, and glistening with a soy-based sauce, it has been slow-cooked till soft and tender.

The minced pork patty comes topped with a salted fish and ginger strips, and it is firm and meaty.

I also had the stuffed tofu, which soaked up the savoury sauce, while the minced pork filling inside added a hearty bite.

Fish Cake from Ye Lai Xiang Teochew Porridge 夜来香潮州粥 at Bukit Merah View

While fish cakes can sometimes be bland, this one is promising with its smooth consistency and clean, mild flavour.

There’s also a simple dish of stir-fried bitter gourd, a common side that adds a slight bitterness to balance out the savouriness of the meats.

The porridge itself is prepared in the traditional Teochew style, characterised by its watery consistency with distinct rice grains.

Then there’s the porridge itself—light, watery, and smooth, just as Teochew porridge should be.

The rice grains are intact, floating in the broth rather than being thick and mushy.

One distinctive aspect of Ye Lai Xiang is the absence of a visible price list for individual dishes.

A typical meal when divided out can cost about $10?

It’s not exactly dirt cheap, but for the variety, it’s fair.

It's not uncommon to encounter a queue, even late into the night. The staff, dressed in matching yellow attire, manage orders efficiently, ensuring that waiting times remain reasonable despite the crowd.
