Question: How many ice cream shops does Orchard Central (and nearby malls) contain?
There are already Overscoop, FYP (For You People) Cafe, The Ice Cream Bar (over at 313@somerset), Vanda Botanical Desserts (313@somerset) and there is also O’ma Spoon which sells ice cream.
Not forgetting the newest entry of Van Leeuwen Ice Cream.
Van Leeuwen Ice Cream started out of a yellow scoop truck on the streets of NYC in 2008 by Ben Van Leeuwen, Pete Van Leeuwen, and Laura O’Neill, who were on a mission to make good ice cream from good ingredients that make you feel good.
Their French-style ice cream, made with more than double the amount of egg yolks as standard ice cream, quickly gained a loyal following.
Having established over 50 scoop shops in America, Van Leeuwen has now expanded to Singapore at Orchard Central.
It is on Level 1 near Uniqlo, and hard to miss.
The interior of the Singapore shop exudes a chic vibe, accented with soft pastels and wooden surfaces.
However, I found part of the seating area, especially the stools, unexpectedly low, possibly causing discomfort to some patrons. Despite this minor drawback, the service was notably friendly, with staff eager to assist and recommend their favourites.
There is quite an alluring menu of ice cream and vegan ice cream.
Classic flavours such as Sicilian Pistachio, Earl Grey Tea, Praline Butter Cake, and Mint Chip line up next to all-American favourites like Honeycomb, Marionberry Cheesecake, and more.
Each scoop is priced at $6.50 to $7.50, perhaps reflecting the premium ingredients involved. Note that there is additional GST.
Upon recommendation, I tried the Honeycomb. The taste was a dance of sweetness and crunch, with the golden, sticky honeycomb bits elevating the flavour.
However, this can be quite a sugar load for those who prefer subtler sweets.
Next was the Marionberry Cheesecake, a playful twist on a classic dessert, offering a rich berry-infused experience.
While deliciously creamy, some might find it a touch too sweet as well.
I opted to enjoy these scoops in a Waffle Cone, which was thicker than usual with a wider-mouthed cone. (Note: they don’t offer the usual waffles and brownies here.)
The crunch was satisfying at first, but I would have preferred if it could stay more crisp throughout the indulgence.
Though some may find the flavours overwhelmingly sweet, it is worth a try if you miss that creaminess and creative choices.
