For one of the most put-together specialist coffee shops in Phuket, Campus Coffee Roasters in the heart of Phuket Town comes frequently recommended.
They also have a branch outlet at Patong.
It started with a university student experimenting with coffee roasting on his own.Later, the café was set up to present locally produced single-origin coffee to both locals and tourists.
In 2019, they were the 4th runner up of the International Coffee Roast Master Thailand, attesting to the quality of the cups they put out.
Today, they are a long-running and full-fledged café on Krabi Road, serving coffee from 8am to 6pm.
The coffee space is always packed though, so it is recommended to come during off-peak hours should you want to take some nice shots.
Seeing as the “Campus” name came from how the owner started out in the coffee business, the décor has also leaned right into it.
The choice of chairs and desks would not look out of place in a proper classroom, and with plenty to go around.
The décor is simple and tasteful, with wooden accents and earthy tones that add to the rustic atmosphere.
Even though it was fairly crowded when I visited, there was this relaxed and welcoming vibe, with a lively and energetic energy that makes it a popular destination for coffee lovers and casual visitors alike.
For the choice of beans, Campus Coffee Roasters’ mainstay has always been those sourced from Northern Thailand.
Their Classic blend, with little acidity and more sweetness, is a dark roast from Chiang Mai.
Something like their Ocean Blend (+10 THB), uses a mix of beans from Chiang Mai and Ethiopia, roasted lightly to produce an aromatic, acidic, and honey-like profile.
Get the coffee as an Espresso (80 THB), Cappuccino (85 THB), Flat White (85 THB), Latte (85 THB), Mocha (90 THB), and more.
There are non-coffee stuff, like Cocoa (75 THB/80THB), Yuzu Lemon Soda (85 THB) and Caramel Milk Shake (85 THB).
Specialty drinks are a must-try. A standout is the Honey Espresso on the Rock (100 THB), which incorporates a double espresso with honey, and with lime and brown sugar on the rim like a martini.
The sweetness cuts through the sharpness of the coffee to leave you with only the full-bodied goodness of coffee.
Affogato (130 THB) is prepared, using a coconut milk ice cream sunk in a double ristretto. The earthy sweet peanut and sesame bar on top brings a Thai edge to the concept.
Or else, there is Jelly Coffee (85 THB), Dirty Coffee (100 THB), Cold Brew Coffee (100 THB) and Ms. Scarlet (130 THB) that is strawberry and raspberry juice shaken with cold brew.
Simple cakes are kept in the fridge, while fresh bakes such as brownies and scones can be ordered at the counter.
Campus Coffee Roasters offers a variety of other cakes including the Caramel Custard Cake, Caramel Macadamia New York Cheesecake and Carrot Cake, priced from 90 THB to 140 THB.
During my visit, I tried their Hokkaido Cheesecake and it was smooth and velvety, with a delicate balance of sweetness that wasn’t too overpowering.
Occasionally, Campus Coffee Roasters holds free coffee cupping sessions – catch them at the right time and you can enjoy all they have to offer.
