There are many new cafes found along Tanjong Pagar Road, but the absence of Five Oars Coffee Roasters could still be felt.

Well, the Melbourne-inspired cafe is back with a “Heritage” branding, and has moved to a few units down at 43 Tanjong Pagar Road.

While the previous unit at Tanjong Pagar had primary white coloured walls and an alfresco dining space, the decor and vibes of this space is closed to its Upper East Coast outlet.

There is use of darker and earthly green and brown tones in a rustic setting, complete with red bricked walls and cemented grey surfaces.

Come evening time, and there will be Night Hawk which serves up cocktails from Tuesdays to Saturdays, 5:30pm to mid-night.

Their Melbourne-inspired menu remains more or less unchanged, with a few additions and updates to the old favourites.

The daytime menu starts from 8.30am till 5:15pm, while dinner service starts from 6pm to 9pm.

If you are looking for brunch, available favourites include the Avocado & Eggs ($18), Baked Eggs ($21), Buttermilk Chicken Burger ($21), Iberico Pork Benedict ($22), Beer Battered Fish & Chips ($25), Seafood Aglio Olio ($26), and Steak & Eggs ($32).

New or updated dishes are the Corned Beef Hash ($23), Mushroom Medley ($20), and Smoked Salmon Rosti ($24).

If breakfast plates are your kind of thing, then go for the Eggs Your Way ($12 onwards) with poached, scrambled, sunny-side up or over-easy with add-ons from hashbrown, avocado, sauteed mushrooms, bratwurst, thick-cut bacon to cajun chicken breast (+$3 to $7).

The Smoked Salmon Rosti ($24) was considered a well-executed standard brunch fare, with generous portion of salmon and two poached eggs with lightly-crisp potato rosti.

I appreciated the greens below which helped balance out the richness.

For something sweet, their dessert menu features Creme Brulee French Toast ($20), Sticky Date Pancakes ($18), Five Oars Waffles ($18) and Strawberry Field Waffles ($18).

The Strawberry Field Waffles ($18) is served with strawberries, strawberry compote, and a scoop of strawberry ice cream on top of the sourdough waffles.

We are beginning to see more sourdough waffles in various new cafes other than the usual buttermilk selection, the former slightly on the citrus and sour side.

2 types of coffee beans are used for their espresso-based drink, one is a 2-beans-blend: Mahogany (Brazil & Colombia) and the other is a single origin Ethiopia, both roasted in-house.

I felt that the Brazil and Colombia blend could be more suitable for espresso-drinks with milk due to the cacao nibs, milk chocolate and hazelnut tasting notes.

Come night time and experience a different menu featuring White Wine Vongole ($22), Grilled Octopus Leg ($24), Pork Ribs ($28), Lamb Ribs ($38), Black Angus Sirloin ($32), Seafood Paella ($45) and other heartier dishes.
