Tanjong Pagar is getting more hip in terms of new café offerings.

Recent TP openings include Alice Boulangerie at Icon Village; Upside Down Coffee Roaster at Anson Road; Cotta, Delicatesse 巧彰, and Haven Coffee along Tanjong Pagar Road.

The newest to be opened is a familiar name to many – Birds of Paradise which has finally opened an outlet closer to the central area.

If you are there, other cafes you can explore along Craig Road include Bearded Bella, Ballad Of Anna May, and vegan outlet of Hvala.

Birds of Paradise is so named because the shop creates gelato inspired by the botanical flavours of nature.

That means fruits, flowers, pods, herbs, and spices.

The owner was inspired to make ice cream since more than a decade ago, experimenting with all types of flavours, till he wanted to settle for something more natural, unique and healthy at the same time.

The brand also takes culinary cues from the South East Asian palate in the use of familiar herbs, such as basil and blue ginger.

Interestingly, they were also given a Michelin recommendation with a Michelin Plate. So not only the usual restaurants and hawker stalls get featured.

BOP flavours you can expect include White Chrysanthemum, Midnight Gianduja, Lychee Raspberry, Pistachio, Strawberry Basil, Sea-Salt Hojicha, Roasted Sesame, Dark Chocolate Sorbet, Hazelnut, Earl Grey & Lemongrass, and Mango Sorbet.

On my wishlist: more floral-flavours… something elderflower, maybe?

Prices go at $4.70 for a single scoop, $7.70 for double scoop, and $1 extra for thyme cone.

Compared to the East Coast outlet where the thyme cone is made within the same counter, there is now a separate room so that the smell doesn’t linger everywhere.

There are also some seats at the back. Not many, say about for four or five pax, but better than nothing?

Some favourites include the White Chrysanthemum with floral infusion and sprinkled with cacao nibs; and Peach & Rose Sorbet with sight sweet-tanginess and fragrant rose aroma.

For those who are less tolerant to overly-sweet desserts, the gelato should appeal to you because they are less-sweet without that artificial twang and colourings.
