If the name Lad & Co sounds familiar, it is the sister-restaurant to Lad & Dad at Tanjong Pagar which specialises in Fish & Chips and British food.
Not to be confused with the other concept, Lad & Co is a fast-casual Fish & Chips concept store found at Tanglin Road, where the Tanglin Post Office Building is.
The family-run business has come a long way, starting as a British pub-grub hawker stall at Serangoon Gardens Food Centre before moving to Maxwell Food Centre subsequently.
The unique stall earned quite many fans, even expats who headed down despite the hot surroundings. The team eventually closed the hawker stall to open a full-fledged shop at Tanjong Pagar.
As for the new Tanglin outlet, the indoor space is inspired by chippy concepts in the UK, while the team hopes to achieve a beer garden feel with the outdoor area.
No frills, self-service, no service charge.
Note that it can be quite cooling to sit outdoors with a view of Tanglin Mall, though there could be mozzies which might interrupt the dining experience.
Mains offered include Fish & Chips ($19, $29), Burger & Chips ($19, $29), Bangers & Mash ($16, $26), and Bacon & Chip Butty ($16) – streaky bacon and hash brown with house sauce in a toasted milk bun.
Prices have gone up from the ‘good-old days’ but it is understandable considering the location and increased costing.
The signature Fish & Chips ($19) features beer-battered Atlantic haddock, mushy peas, straight cut chips and accompanied with gherkin tartar sauce.
The batter continued to be the winning component for me, coming in that delectable golden-brown shade.
When you cut across with the knife, you could totally feel that crisp of the batter – thick and crunchy, plus not too oily at all.
Of course, people have different opinions of food, and my dining partner thought that it was way-too-crunchy and he would have preferred some ‘fluffiness’.
The Bangers & Mash ($16) uses fresh English pork sausages that are made out of finely minced meat instead of processed food – which is why you are getting more value for your buck.
Beneath is a bed of freshly boiled and mashed potatoes cooked with pure butter.
Side items to order include Onion Rings ($12), Scotch Egg ($12), Pig in Blankets ($14), Cheesy Curry Chips ($14), Oyster Nuggets ($18) and Scampi Nuggets ($18).
The Oyster Nuggets ($18) probably used the same type of batter as the fish, in which you can experience the contrast of the golden-brown crispy exterior and plump oysters.
As I ordered this together with the Fish & Chips, it did feel like having a lot of the same batter, so I might just have switched one of the items in retrospect.
