SKS City Mall JBCC, connected right next to Sheraton Johor Bahru, is one of the newer names to add to a Johor Bahru mall or food trip, especially for those who don’t want to head too far after clearing customs.
Well, it is not exactly within the usual walking route from CIQ, but the drive is short enough for those taking Grab or staying in the area.
Palates & Bagels by T.A.M is one of the more prominent café options at SKS City Mall JBCC, located right on Level 1 (next to the Grab drop-off point).
The brand should be familiar to those who follow the café scene, with earlier outlets at Jalan Dhoby and Taman Melodies.
The entrance is framed by planter boxes, dark wood tones, and a glowing bagel sign, while the seating area has warm lighting, wooden furniture and quite a bit of greenery.
So many choices… If you are unsure where to start, the six recommended bagels are Choco Orange, Garlic Cream Cheese, Focaccia Bagel, Sweet Potato Mochi, Charcoal Pistachio and Raspberry Lychee.
You can also add spreads such as Mixed Herb Cream Cheese (RM 3.90), Tomato Butter (RM 3.90), and Dijon Orange (RM 3.90). (Can ask for samples if you want to try-try.)
The Garlic Cream Cheese (RM 10) is marked as the “Top 1 choice”, and came with a golden surface, cream cheese tucked into the cut centre, and chopped herbs over the top.
It looked a little like the cousin of a Korean garlic cream cheese bun, except in bagel form. Texture-wise, this was softer and more bread like than the dense, chewy bagels some may expect.
The garlic cream cheese filling was also sweetish, and I found that it worked well overall. No wonder it’s Number 1.
The Choco Orange (RM 7) looked attractive, with a darker bagel base, chocolate glaze and a dried orange slice on top.
I would have preferred a deeper chocolate flavour though, as the overall taste was gentler than the appearance suggested.
For something more filling, the savoury bagel sandwiches include Spicy Butter Milk Chicken Bagel (RM 29.90), Blossom Bagel (RM 32.90), Smoked Salmon Bagel (RM 39.90), and Beef Brisket Bagel (RM 40.90).
These come with fries and mayo, for those who prefer a fuller café meal.
Palates & Bagels by T.A.M gives SKS City Mall JBCC a proper café option beyond the usual mall drinks and desserts.
I would return more for the filled bagels, and it’s definitely one of the more promising cafés in this mall.
