After reading one too many online lists of the “best coffee in Penang“, I bookmarked OSSA Roastery & Brew Co as one of the cafés to try.
The reason was simple enough. It is also a roastery and brew company, with its own roasted beans available to bring home.
While many nearby cafés focus entirely on the aesthetics of their furniture, this place puts the coffee production more visibly in focus.
From the outside, OSSA Roastery & Brew Co blends in with the row of heritage buildings along Lebuh Armenian, with pastel shutters and weathered walls.
Inside, the café is narrow but comfortable, with patterned floor tiles, rattan chairs, warm wood, a long counter, and shelves of coffee items.
There are large burlap sacks of raw coffee beans from Ethiopia and Peru piled on wooden pallets right next to the seating area.
You can see the roasting equipment and the packaging station as you walk in, which gives you a clearer sense of the work that goes into each cup.
The menu is compact and mainly built around coffee, matcha, cocoa drinks, signature beverages, milkshakes, and simple bakes.
Signature drinks include Fizzy Night (RM 15), Fizzy Sunset (RM 15), Orange Coffee (RM 14), Clarified Coffee (RM 18), Coffee Supreme (RM 16), Hana No Kumo (RM 16), and Matcha Strawberry (RM 19).
Other coffee options are the Black (RM 9), White (RM 13) with latte, cappuccino, flat white or piccolo, Mocha (RM 16), and Cold Brew (RM 10).
For the coffee, I went with the OSSA Blend which uses beans from Colombia and Brazil, with Castillo and Yellow Bourbon varieties.
I had it as a White, and the medium-light roast had a distinct profile of berries and tropical fruits with a lingering cacao nib finish.
The food menu was kept rather simple, with a small selection of light bakes like Banana Walnut Cake (RM 8.50), Banana Chocolate Chip Pound Cake (RM 5.90), Banana Cake (RM 5.30), and Cheese Spring Onion Scone (RM 5.90).
Would I call it the best coffee in Penang? Not sure yet.
But OSSA Roastery & Brew Co is a good, calm stop along Lebuh Armenian, especially if you are already exploring the area and want a quieter break from the busier parts of George Town.
