I made my way to Dusky Coffee Roastery in Penang for the choux puff.
Located on the ground floor of 58 Jalan Transfer in George Town, Dusky Coffee Roastery is a fairly compact café with a focused menu of coffee, specialty drinks, and pastries.
The place is not big, so do not come expecting a sprawling café where you can hide with a laptop for half a day.
Service was fairly functional during my visit, rather than warm or cheerful.
The Dusky Choux (RM 17 each) is probably the item that draws the most curiosity.
Flavours listed include Peanut Mochi, Black Sesame, Yam Coconut Jelly, Matcha with Jelly, and Chocolate with Jelly.
The one I had was the Yam Coconut Jelly, with a crisp choux shell, pale cream, and a soft purple filling that gave it that modern Asian dessert look.
It was not the neatest thing to eat.
I was half wondering if I should take this in one bite, or cut it up (which proved to be difficult due to the wobbly jelly in between).
The choux had a crumbly top and a light pastry base, while the coconut jelly and yam filling gave it a soft, cool contrast.
If you are up for coffee, there are beans to choose from such as the Gentle Awakening, a medium roast with Brazil and Colombia beans which is bright, nutty, and chocolatey.
Or Golden Hour, a medium dark roast with Colombia and El Salvador beans which is warm, balanced, and smooth.
Come for the choux if you are curious, or get yourself a refreshing Coconut Matcha and keep the visit short and sweet.
