Bedok 216 is better known as a daytime hawker centre, but Sin Ho 星河 gives people a reason to look for it later in the day too.
Sin Ho does two things under one signboard. In the day, it serves fish soup.
After 5pm, it moves into zi char mode, with cooked dishes such as prawn paste chicken, sambal lala, pork ribs, omelette, seafood bee hoon, hor fun and vegetables.
The printed order sheet has more than 50 items, which is both useful and mildly stressful when people behind you already know what they want.
Popular dishes include Batang Fish Slice Soup ($5, $7, $9), Crayfish Seafood with Bee Hoon ($22, $30), Prawn Paste Chicken ($10), Sambal Lala ($11, $15), Sambal Sotong ($12, $16), Sweet & Sour Pork Ribs ($9, $13), Cereal Chicken ($10, $14), and Fried French Beans ($6.50).
Just to name a few, with prices still relatively inexpensive by today’s standards.
Almost every table I saw had ordered the Prawn Paste Chicken ($10), which arrived hot and golden.
No wonder. The chicken pieces had a crisp, rough-edged coating with a savoury prawn paste aroma.
The inside was still fairly juicy, while the outside had that crunchy bite you want from har cheong gai.
I also tried the seafood bee hoon, which came in a pale, cloudy broth with bee hoon, fish slices, prawns, clams and vegetables.
The bee hoon soaked up the broth quite well, though I would have liked a little more seafood-y depth in the soup.
It was more comforting than punchy, with a gentle sweetness from the seafood rather than a strong, full-bodied stock.
Of course, there are many more dishes to try… I had limited stomach space.
Sin Ho is a hawker stall with a very wide menu, fish soup for the earlier crowd, and cooked dishes for those who come later. The Prawn Paste Chicken gave the meal its strongest reason to return.
