Tipo is one of the names known for house-made pasta, unusual pasta shapes and a craft-focused style that feels a little different from standard Italian chains.
I realised Tipo Strada has opened at Great World (though with little publicity). This is the group’s mall-based outlet, created as a more streamlined extension of the flagship concept.
Fresh pasta is made daily in small batches. The shapes rotate, which keeps the menu flexible but also means diners can return and try something new.
The setting feels like a cafe, with terrazzo tables and open wooden trays of handmade pasta.
During my visit the tray held three varieties: blue pea mafalde, chilli lime and parsley campanelle, and taro creste di gallo.
If you are lost for choices, the top four favourites are Prawn Aglio ($17.50), Chicken Pesto ($16.60), Black Prawn ($19.90), and Creamy Crab ($19.90).
Other mix-and-match options include Chicken Arrabiata ($15.80), Alfredo ($16.90), Truffle Carbonara ($17.90), Creamy Mushroom ($17.90), Smoked Duck Pomodoro ($17.50) and Creamy Chicken ($16.90).
For my meal I ordered the Prawn Aglio paired with campanelle. Campanelle is shaped like small trumpets with ruffled edges that catch and hold sauce well.
The pasta had a distinct bite, firm and slightly springy.
I liked the prawns which tasted fresh, and the garlic gave the dish a pleasant fragrance. Though I felt a little more seasoning would have helped the dish reach a fuller flavour.
The Creamy Chicken with mafalde felt more indulgent. Mafalde which is a flat ribbon pasta, is a good match for cream sauce because its wide ripples hold sauce without turning stodgy.
The texture with a good bite was the strong point again.
As for the chicken pieces, they were tender and well cooked but could use a touch more depth or sear.
Prices climb once you start adding toppings, so the final bill can feel high for a casual meal, but the fresh pasta in a comfortable mall setting does provide an edge.
