I stepped into Pete’s Place in the basement of the Grand Hyatt Singapore and felt a gentle wave of nostalgia. This was one of the first Italian restaurants I blogged about.

Since 1973 (that’s older than many of us), it has served as a dependable destination for authentic Italian comfort food.

You can say it is a basement ‘hideaway’ where regulars return for familiar flavours and warm service.

Following a revamp, the space now includes a private dining room, a grand wine cellar, and even a chef’s table where guests can watch their dishes prepared before arriving tableside.

At the helm is newly-appointed Chef Salvatore Giorgio Catania, who hails from Puglia.

His approach respects the classics while giving them small touches of freshness that keep the menu interesting without straying into theatrics.

Lunch at Pete’s Place is especially popular, with a semi-buffet style Set Lunch available from Monday to Saturday.

For $42++, the two-course option lets you choose a main, and antipasti buffet or dessert buffet. The three-course version at $52++ offers all three.

For anyone who enjoys variety, the three-course set is easily the better option, because it allows you to enjoy both the beginning and end of the meal with no restraint.

Each set also comes with a soup, Nordaq still or sparkling water, and coffee or tea.

The antipasti bar tempts with Italian cheeses, cold cuts, fresh salads, and baskets of home-made bread that arrive warm and inviting.

Conchiglie Cioppino
Going on to the mains, the Conchiglie Cioppino is the must-order, using the original recipe from 1973.

The shell-shaped pasta holds onto a tomato-based broth rich with prawns, scallops, mussels, and half a Boston lobster. Loved the sweetness from the shellfish and depth from the slow-cooked sauce.

Rigatoni Bolognese
The Rigatoni Bolognese is more down-to-earth but no less satisfying.

Each ridged tube catches the slow-cooked beef ragù, delivering comfort in every mouthful.

Pizza Diavola
The pizza base is crisp yet chewy, layered with tangy San Marzano tomatoes, mozzarella, and pecorino.

Spicy salami takes centre stage, giving each bite a touch of lingering heat.

The dessert buffet has its own charms, with the signature tiramisu, creamy panna cotta, rustic chocolate salame, rotating house-made tarts, and soft serve.

One of the à la carte menu highlights is the Costoletta alla Milanese (serves 2 diners), a veal cutlet coated in golden breadcrumbs and fried in butter until crisp.

It is a classic straight out of Milan, and Pete’s Place delivers it with confidence, presenting it tableside.

The veal stays tender inside, the crust crackles with every bite, and a squeeze of lemon brightens the flavours.

Pete’s Place is all about Italian comfort food, served in a setting that feels familiar even on your first visit.

Whether you are here for a quick Set Lunch, a hearty pizza, or a Milanese cutlet that tastes like a trip to Italy, the restaurant continues to prove why it has held its place in Singapore’s dining scene for so long.
