I always see this corner Char Kway Teow stall closed, and when it finally opened, I decided to try it.

Food Street Fried Kway Teow Mee is located at Chinatown Complex Market and Food Centre, found quite conspicuously near the centre.

What initially caught my attention was its appearance in the MICHELIN Guide Singapore, though this inclusion was not widely publicised.

It was listed as “Selected” rather than Bib Gourmand though.

How did MICHELIN manage to highlight this stall and completely miss the legendary Hill Street Fried Kway Teow in the same complex?

I joined the short line, and watched the hawker work. The queue moved relatively fast, and took about 15 minutes in the end.

$5 or $7 for the standard plate, $7 or $10 for the seafood option.

The plate looked generous. A mix of flat rice noodles and yellow egg noodles coated in glossy soy, bean sprouts tucked through, cockles adding colour.

There’s what I liked and what I didn’t.

What I enjoyed was the softness of the noodles with a touch of smokiness, and the bean sprouts that gave a fresh crunch.

On the flipside, the prawns turned out mushy, and the dish leaned a little too oily for me.

Reviews online are mixed, and the Google rating sits around three stars.

Some customers complained of soft noodles or a lack of depth in flavour. Others mentioned long waits, and to find the stall shut frequently.

I left satisfied but not totally amazed.

It was a competent plate, considerably flavourful, but a smokier wok hei would have made it truly crave-worthy.
