Telok Blangah Rise Food Centre is probably one of the most under-the-radar hawker centres in Singapore.
It’s known for its affordable prices and friendly hawkers, and is popular with residents and hikers from nearby Mount Faber Park.
Don’t confuse it with the other two nearby centres – Telok Blangah Drive and Telok Blangah Crescent Food Centres.
One of the long-standing stalls here is Hai Yan Fried Kway Teow Mee, run by a husband-and-wife team since 1976.
Their menu is straightforward: Fried Kway Teow and Fried Bee Hoon, available in portions priced at $3.50, $4, $5, and $6.
The Fried Kway Teow is a mix of flat rice noodles and yellow noodles, stir-fried with slices of Chinese sausage, bits of fish cake, egg, and pork lard.
No cockles here.
That might be a bonus for people who can’t stand them, and personally, I don’t miss that briny bite that much.
The noodles came glossy with dark soy sauce, and there was a slight hit of wok hei.
However, if you want to try something different, go for the Fried Bee Hoon which is less commonly found.
Same ingredients, just a different noodle type.
It had the smoky edge, wok-hei and seemed to have a bit more punch in the seasoning.
Between the two, I’d say the bee hoon version carried the flavours better.
And do add a sunny-side-up egg for a dollar. Definitely worth it.
The yolk was runny and coated the bee hoon nicely when mixed in, making everything richer. Without the egg, the dish might have leaned a bit dry.
If you’re going to order, trust me and get the egg. That extra bit takes it from decent to properly satisfying.
