So cute. Just look at this Matcha Strawberry with a kitty marshmallow.
Craefe? Cræfe? Help, how to pronounce?
Okay, the owners added the “æ” as a playful twist, an open invitation to pronounce it however your heart wants… crave, crae-fee, or anything in between.
I made my way to Craefe located in Parc Elegance at Telok Kurau.
Nothing too fancy in terms of decor.
The space is quiet and soothing with pale blue walls, lots of white and touches of rattan.
The people behind Craefe also run Bræk Acai & Coffee at SMU, but here the focus shifts to Japanese-inspired gelato and matcha drinks.
Expect gelato (cup or cone, up to you), sundaes, tea drinks and a few seasonal specials. There is no hot food or savoury item in sight.
For drinks, the cafe serves Pure Matcha ($6), Matcha Einspanner ($6.50), Strawberry Matcha ($7), Coconut Cloud ($7), Pure Hojicha ($6), Hojicha Einspanner ($6.50), Blueberry Hojicha ($7), Pure Genmaicha ($6), and Genmaicha Einspanner ($6.50).
The Strawberry Matcha ($7) is topped with a marshmallow decorated like a cat for a cutesy finish. Okay lah.
Here, they take ceremonial-grade matcha and pour over strawberry compote, with quite a bit of sweetness (definitely sweeter than the average cup elsewhere).
Though not considered your typical sugar bomb yet. Every sip gives you the slight bitterness of the matcha followed by the brightness of berry.
Gelato is priced at $5 for a single scoop and $9 for two scoops.
Flavours included Ume Yuri Matcha, Tahitian Vanilla, Greek Yoghurt Gelato, Crema al Pistacchio, Mint Choco Stracciatella, Bacio Gianduja, Chrysanthemum with Cacao Nibs, Raspberry Sorbet, Cioccolato Fondente (85% dark chocolate), Jasmine Gelato, Strawberry Basil Sorbet, and Strawberry Gelato.
Surprisingly, the Crema al Pistacchio was unmistakably pistachio-rich but not cloying, with a gentle creaminess and made better with some chopped up nuts on top.
My other pick of Chrysanthemum with Cacao Nibs offered a floral, almost herbal aroma that stood out from the first spoonful, paired with crisp cacao nibs that added a subtle chocolate crunch. Quite refreshing.
If you’re hoping for something savoury or a big meal, this place is strictly about the sweets.
Best part? Craefe stays open till 1am on Fridays and Saturdays. Late-night matcha and sugar cravings, sorted.
