Matcha is back in style in Singapore. Everyone from café hoppers to office workers seems to be swapping their usual coffee for this vibrant green tea.
Social media helps, of course.
There are more new specialty cafés and dedicated tea bars like Fatto Catto now serving ceremonial-grade matcha and creative blends.
Fatto Catto?
In case you find the name vaguely familar, this cafe at Simon Road (a short walk from Kovan MRT) is by the owner of the popular Fat Cat Ice Cream Bar.
With this revamped space, the focus is on high-quality Japanese matcha and tea-based drinks.
Signature choices include the Fatto Catto Classic (hot $7.50, iced $8.50), a single cultivar Yabukita matcha with light grassy notes.
And the Maneki-Neko (hot $10.00, iced $11.00), made from a blend of Okumidori, Tsuyuhikari, and Sayamakori matcha with smooth malt sweetness and a mellow finish.
The Spring Dragon Meow (hot $8.50, iced $9.50) uses Longjing43 matcha and is described as silky, gently astringent, and finished with a floral jasmine note.
The Fatto Catto Classic had a gentle sweetness that came through right away.
The grassy notes were there, but they were soft and fresh, not overpowering at all.
Honestly, if you are new to matcha or have had bad experiences before, this is a safe and genuinely enjoyable place to start.
In case you miss Fat Cat’s ice cream selection, it is still available here with a mix of classic and premium flavours, available as a single scoop ($5.50 cup, $7.50 cone) or a double scoop ($10 cup, $12 cone).
Flavours I saw on display included coconut, cookies and cream, burnt konbu, banana-su, salted caramel, earl grey lavender, lychee black tea, hojicha, watermelon isphahan sorbet, and black sesame.
Fatto Catto currently operates as a pop-up and is expected to stay in this format until the end of 2025.
