Even though it is in the Jalan Besar hood, Veerasamy Road is not a typical place you would head down to find a cafe.

I happened to come across a neighbourhood bakery cafe SL Bakehouse, that has earned its place among Singapore’s growing artisanal bread and pastry scene.

Tucked away in a relatively quiet area, the bakehouse does not have the typical fancy name. It is actually named after the two baker-founders, Sam and Steve.

When visiting, you will likely find a display of freshly baked items ranging from traditional danishes to some unique creations.

Sourdough Egg Tarts and More: What Makes SL Bakehouse Stand Out

I almost missed their Sourdough Egg Tart ($2.20), as it was placed in a different spot from their usual window display.

This is worth an order. The first thing you will notice about the tart is its visually striking colour, encased in a crisp, buttery black shell infused with charcoal powder.

The filling is soft, with a subtle sweetness and an enjoyable custardy texture.

While marketed as a sourdough tart, it doesn’t carry the expected tang, which may or may not be a surprise depending on your preference.

The menu at SL Bakehouse includes a variety of freshly baked bread options such as Brioche ($2.50), Shio Pan ($2.80), Baguette ($3.50), and Roasted Mix Seed Loaf ($8.50).

For those who enjoy viennoiseries, they offer Croissants ($3.80), Pain Au Raisin ($4.20), and the indulgent Pain Au Chocolate ($4.20).

Crisp, Buttery Croissant Meets Juicy Sausage: A Winning Combination

While looking simple, the Sausage Croissant boasts flaky, buttery croissant enveloping two halves of a savoury sausage.

The croissant maintains its light and crisp texture, with creamy filling inside.

For those with a sweet tooth, you can try their Petit Gateau selection which includes Exotic Tart ($7.60), Caramel Hazelnut Tart ($8.60), Cheesecake ($8.60), and Paris Brest ($8.60).

Despite its humble location, the bakery competes well with more central patisseries, and yet manages to keep prices affordable.

SL Bakehouse is a lovely addition to the neighbourhood for those nearby Jalan Besar.
