There are cheese cakes, and there are CHEESE cakes.
Queic by Olivia is known for its famous Basque-style burnt cheesecake, which has drawn a significant amount of attention, especially on social media.
It has opened a new outlet at Scotts Square’s basement.
This café with an original outlet at Kreta Ayer, is an offshoot of the acclaimed Olivia Restaurant noted for its Spanish cuisine.
It brings a slice of Barcelona’s sweet life to Singapore’s Orchard Road. Certainly more convenient for many.
The interior though small, exudes a warm atmosphere with décor inspired by the golden hues of its signature cheesecakes.
Their recommended item is the Olivia’s Signature Cheesecake, a blend of cream and blue cheese on an almond sable base.
Not super cheap though. It is available in different sizes: single portion ($15), 6-inch ($48), 9-inch ($85), and 11-inch ($115).
There is a reason for its popularity – its creamy, gooey centre, combining sweet and savoury elements, all in a balanced and refined way.
The top is delicately caramelised, while the interior remains molten soft – unlike the usual cheesecake.
Another popular choice is the Olivia’s Chocolate Cheesecake ($17 for 4-inch size) made with a cocoa almond sable, roasted hazelnut praline, and dark chocolate cream cheese.
If you prefer an even stronger cheese flavour, the menu includes a decadent Brie Cheesecake ($48 for 8 inches), and a more luxurious Truffle Brie Cheesecake ($33 for a portion), both featuring Brie de Meaux.
There’s also a Cheesecake Board with selections of Brie, Gruyère, Valencay, and Stilton cheeses, served with cherry jam and sable cookies, available as individual portions ($15 each) or as a board for sharing ($45).
I decided to go for the cute-looking Queic’s Gruyère Cheesecake ($15) and was in for a taste surprise.
The creamy texture is familiar, but the sharp, aged Gruyère adds a complexity that isn’t typical of most cheesecakes.
It is made with 12-month-aged Swiss Gruyère, which deepens the flavour and gives the dessert a distinct savoury richness.
The strong savouriness can be surprising at first and definitely requires some getting used to.
Some rave about the distinct flavours and textures of the cheesecakes, particularly the use of savoury elements like Valdeon cheese in Olivia’s burnt cheesecake.
However, others feel the price point is on the higher side for what is essentially a dessert-focused café.
