[Bangkok] One would have thought you would most likely find a “Singapore Chilli Crab” dessert like this in Singapore.

But well, you can have this brilliant creative sweet treat in a bungalow-like cafe at Sukhumvit, Bangkok.

The pastry chef responsible for fine sugary finales at Issaya Group restaurants has now begun to put her sweet creations on the center stage at ICI, a dessert café hidden deep within one of Sukhumvit’s many labyrinths.

Arisara “Paper” Chongphanitkul finds her home in a two-storey modern-chic building with baby blue walls and paintings that are parody of famous art pieces.

Stepping into ICI is like stepping into a luxurious home, where you can kick back on soft lounge chairs or cloud-like padded stools and melt away.

There is even a garden if you are fond of sunshine coming down at you, albeit under the shade of tropical potted plants.

ICI is known for its classic French desserts, oversized whole cakes, and cutesy designed cakes. Much of the menu is playful and welcoming.

Coming to the best stuff, the magnum opus of ICI is probably the “Like A Singaporean Chilli Crab” (450 THB). This beautiful dessert was served in the Michelin Guide Singapore 2019 Dinner, and it does not get much better than this.

The complex dessert has a combination of contrasting flavour notes, from a spicy chilli sauce to the saccharine coffee caramel, rounded off with the essential salted egg crumb.

Once you have a bite, you will understand why reviewers rave about the dish. Appearance aside, the sponge cake is well complemented by all of the flavours.

If the faux chilli crab is too confusing, you can sit under the cutesy Mona Lisa painting and have the signature Starfish (450 THB) which is recommended by the Michelin Guide Thailand.

This desserts is made to look like a bright yellow starfish on a beach, with creamy coffee-vanilla mascarpone mousse stuffed with sweet and sour pineapple compote and nutty praline.

The bubbles and sand are made with herby ginger milk foam, ginger drops and coconut rum gel.

There is the Chocolate Praline Tart (195 THB) which is macaron, tart, and cake all at once, the hazelnut praline and chocolate ganache bring the dreamy structure together.

Some of the other instagrammable cakes include the 3 Little Pigs (295 THB), Re-Charge (295 THB), Sunshine (256 THB) and Sweet Dream (225 THB).

Little pieces of spongey financier come in 8 flavours. The Original (65 THB) is buttery and moist. Try the smooth Praline (85 THB) or the hearty Lime Poppy Seeds (75 THB).

Scones are also done well, with the Blueberry (75 THB) a favourite and the Choco Chips (75 THB) coming in second.

Do not leave empty handed but bring a drink with you on the way out. Try the Elder Flower Soda (185 THB) with lemon gelee, or Butter-Scotch Milk (195 THB) with corn ice cream.

You can also find another ICI café within Mahanakhon CUBE at King Power Mahanakhon (Chong Nonsi BTS), if the original outlet is too far for you.

ICI is full of divine creations, representing an entire culinary adventure for you to take on.
