Don Don Prawn Noodles 咚咚虾面 is a slightly under-the-radar stall because it is considered ‘newly’ established in 2019, located at Circuit Road Hawker Centre (near Macpherson and Mattar MRT stations).

When you talk about Prawn Mee in Singapore, some of the better known brands include Zion Road Fresh Taste Big Prawn Noodles, Beach Road Prawn Noodle House (East Coast Road), Blanco Court Prawn Mee (Beach Road), River South (Hoe Nam) Prawn Noodles, 545 Whampoa Prawn Noodles (Tekka Food Centre), to the new One Prawn & Co (MacPherson).

The hawker Don (that’s why Don Don Prawn Noodles) came out of retirement to set up this stall, and she could be seen speaking to customers to get feedback on how she can improve.

Selection here includes Jumbo Prawn Noodles ($9.80), Pork Rib Jumbo Prawn Noodles ($8.80), Pork Rib Prawn Noodles ($5, $6), Pig Tail Prawn Noodles ($5, $6), and Prawn Noodles ($4, $5).

There is also a Combo Set priced at $13.80.

The stall uses fresh red leg prawns from the market, that comes deshelled (good news for many of you who do not like to get your hands dirty), with tender texture of the prawn meat, along with mild and sweet taste.

As for the pork ribs, though meaty, they were pretty tender and made a great accompaniment to the fresh prawns.

Accordingly, the meats undergo a marination and steaming process. (I had this early in the morning during the stall’s opening hour; and according to Don, the pork ribs would be softer if I came later.)

There is just something about its rich and complex prawn broth, and tasty mixes of seasoning that makes the dry noodles enjoyable.

Plus, it was not overly jelak even if the colour may suggest otherwise.

There was also the fried shallots, fried garlic and pork lard which makes the noodles more fragrant when tossed.

Good news for those who likes mee kia paired with prawn noodles, I think Don Don does quite a good job in keeping the noodles springy tossed with in tasty mix of sauce with a savoury punch.
